Silk, one of the oldest fibers known to man, originated in China. The history of silk is both enchanting and illustrious. The following sections cover the various facets of silk history. According to well-established Chinese legend, Empress Hsi Ling Shi, wife of Emperor Huang Ti also called the Yellow Emperor , was the first person to accidentally discover silk as weavable fiber.
Even before the United States entered the First World War in , procurement officers for the armed forces began to look for sources for the vast array of goods that the American military would need to go to war across the ocean. A particular kind of silk fiber was high on their list of necessary goods. Spun silk yarns and silk noils short or uneven fibers that can't be used to make the most expensive dress silks were required by the army and the navy. Both services had tried to find a substitute for silk in one vital product, and failed. When burned, silk vanishes completely, leaving no ash residue behind. So the bags that held the powder charges that fired off every shell from the big artillery guns, on land or sea, during the First World War were made of silk. And spun silks and noils were much less expensive than premium silk yarns. The American silk industry responded to this call, providing about five million square yards per month of undyed, unbleached, plain weave cartridge bag silk to the U. War Department during and One of the prime movers in the acquisition of silk for cartridge bags was Moses Charles Migel, who had begun in the silk business as a salesman, started his own silk textile manufacturing firm in his 20s, and had retired from that and opened a new company to manufacture spun silk yarns in January

Sudbury is a major silk manufacturing centre with five local firms involved in the production of a wide range of quality fabrics. However, silk manufacture has been established here a mere years or so, whilst textile manufacturing has been established in the town since at least the 14 th century. When demand for the heavy woollen broadcloth declined in the 16 th century the weavers of Sudbury turned to producing lighter fabrics — bays, says, crepes and cotton bunting — in the 18 th century much of the bunting was supplied to the Royal Navy for flags.

The new company, called Bombyx, was founded in and has invested in a production facility in Sichuan Province's Yilong County in China. Here silkworms are raised and harvested at an eco-friendly organic sericulture base where each step of the manufacturing process incorporates sustainability practices such as water conservation efforts, and efficient use of non-renewable and renewable energy. Establishing the sericulture bases in Yilong County initially created more than jobs for local farmers. Plans include building three new facilities to allow direct control of the entire manufacturing process from mulberry tree to finished fabric, with a reeling silk facility, a weaving and knitting facility, and a degumming and dyeing facility.
In textile manufacturing , finishing refers to the processes that convert the woven or knitted cloth into a usable material and more specifically to any process performed after dyeing the yarn or fabric to improve the look, performance, or "hand" feel of the finish textile or clothing. Some finishing techniques such as bleaching and dyeing are applied to yarn before it is woven while others are applied to the grey cloth directly after it is woven or knitted. In order to impart the required functional properties to the fiber or fabric, it is customary to subject the material to different types of physical and chemical treatments.
