The industry of silk weaving started to develop in Russia in the early 18th century, prompted by the reforms of Peter the Great. It continued to expand rapidly for the rest of the century, and many new manufactories were founded, especially in the Moscow area.

As an example, one can name the Lazarev manufactory in the village of Fryanovo which produced high-quality silk. In the 19th century, the Russian silk-weaving industry grew further, with more manufactories and better production and finishing technologies. Damask was a very popular type of decorative fabric.

It was used in folk costumes: a special type of sarafan was known as the shtofnik damask dress. It was also widely used in interior design: in wall and furniture upholstery, curtain and drapery production.

Such fabrics were made at the manufactories in the Kolomenskoye and Bogorodsk districts near Moscow. The Sapozhnikov factory in Moscow was widely renowned. Founded by G. Sapozhnikov in and inherited by his sons, it produced different types of silk fabrics. The factory's chief glory came from decorative fabrics used by many architects who designed the interiors of St Petersburg and Moscow palaces.

The very fact that all the fabrics used in the decoration of the Great Kremlin Palace were commissioned from this factory shows the high quality of its products. The surviving examples are still remarkable in their workmanship and finish. In the first half of the 19th century, Russian textile industry invented interesting and original products: the so-called "sarafan" fabrics, used in the making of festive folk costumes: sarafans, dushegreyas waistcoats and headwear.

The design of these fabrics reflects the tradition of Russian folk art: a bright background blue, red, crimson, purple ; and embroidery in metal thread which made the fabrics look especially glamorous.

A growing demand for church vestments also played its part in the development of Russian silk-weaving. The diverse range of silk fabrics manufactured in Russia started to include patterns with crosses and other ecclesiastical symbols.

The I. Zheverzheyev factory in St Petersburg produced especially striking fabrics and ready-made garments for the needs of the clergy. A description of Russian silk production would be incomplete without mentioning another type of products, namely the silk and brocade headscarves and shawls.

Festive silk headscarves were an obligatory accessory used in the festive dress worn by peasant women, while the bright silk shawls were a favourite with merchant women. A rich and diverse collection of silk headscarves and shawls makes it possible to follow the evolution of this necessary accessory. Go to global search press enter. Go to main content press enter.

Terminology: The So-Called ‘Viking’ Apron Dress

During the Soviet era, limitations on materials and manufacturing forced many Russians to dress in poorly made, out-of-fashion clothing. However, since the fall of communism, economic improvements and an increase in trade with other countries has improved the quality of clothing and fashion for middle- and upper-class Russians of all ages. Prior to the 18th century, Russian attire remained largely the same as it had been during the Middle Ages.

At the same time, her writing is so thoughtful and considered that it makes me continually realise how timeless and universal textiles are, and how relevant the way we think about the scraps of fabric found in Viking burials for example is to the way we think about fashion and textile design today. So without further ado, Cathy:. Unfortunately, as one delves back into what is known about costume in these periods, it quickly becomes clear that we seldom know what the original garments looked like, let alone what the people who wore them called them.
